Regardless of what you have been told about making decisions, one thing that is ultimately true is the notion that there are consequences to every decision you make and it will be yours, not anyone else's.

However, what people don’t tell you about decision making is how to asses it based on your actual needs and what’s in reach of what you can accomplish. It is very difficult to not be influenced by various factors of culture, religion, thoughts of others, and finances. But, if you put aside all of these factors and do what’s based on what your needs are, you will always succeed. It’s hard when the support system you have may disagree with how you want to lead your life but if you take into account what’s best for you and “meditate” on that. Take a deeper look at what makes you excited and how you want to build a life for your future.

Decisions can last with you forever, as mentioned before, with each decision there is a consequence (good or bad). But, taking into account what you need for yourself will look different and be something that many people might not understand.

Here’s what I believe you need to take into account with your decisions before you go for it.

  1. Do what’s best for you (cliche, I know) — What should be taken from this is that after reflecting deep down within yourself, you will know exactly what you need. If you don’t go for it now, you will be chasing what you need for the rest of your life. Do what’s best for you!
  2. Don’t listen to other people unless they have had a similar experience or are a trained professional (therapist, psychologist, etc.) — There are a ton of people out there claiming that they have all the answers, know how to succeed in this world, and have an underlying bias. Having a trained professional with knowledge without any bias will take away all of the confusion and ensure you’re told NOT what you want to hear but what you NEED to hear.
  3. Your happiness should be your ultimate goal — Regardless of the obstacles in your way, you do not want to live your life with regret or thoughts of what could have been. This can haunt you every day. This is your life and you need to ride the waves to ongoing happiness.
  4. If you sense something is off/a red flag, don’t go for it — I’ve seen and experienced many mistakes based on the fact that I didn’t go with my gut. There’s a reason your brain signals you warning signs, it’s for your own good. Your body and brain allow function so that you can protect yourself.

These tips may seem obvious to some or cliche, but without a doubt, these tips have helped me make decisions with peace of mind and know how to be wiser in choosing what’s best for me.
